Another quake rattles Kuril Islands

Advertiser Staff

An earthquake given a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 shook an area east of the Kuril Islands, which are northeast of Japan, about 9:10 this morning Hawai'i time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in 'Ewa Beach.

Center officials issued an advisory saying no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

This morning's temblor occurred in the same general area where an earthquake with an 8.3 magnitude happened Nov. 15.

The larger quake last month resulted in a mini-tsunami that reached Hawai'i shores about six hours later, causing unusual currents and surges along shoreline areas here.
