COOLEN TO BE HONORED

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association will honor University of Hawai'i coach Bob Coolen for winning his 600th game last season.

In 20 seasons as head coach, including the past 14 at UH, Coolen is 619-447-1.

Coolen is the winningest coach in the Rainbow Wahine's history with a 547-354-1 record. He was Bentley's coach from 1985 through 1989.

Coolen will be honored today during the Eastern Victory Club's luncheon in Tucson, Ariz.

"Usually I tell them to send the plaque," Coolen said. "This year, they made it a point to ask if I would be there. I said, 'all right.' "

Coolen earned his 600th victory on May 16 when freshman Justine Smethurst pitched a perfect game in defeating Longwood, 6-0.

Last season, Coolen nearly led the Rainbows to the NCAA tournament. They lost in the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
