Balding steps down

Advertiser Staff

Peter Balding has stepped down as Punahou School's boys volleyball coach after guiding the Buffanblu to the past three state championships, athletic director Tom Holden announced yesterday.

Holden said assistant coach Rick Tune will be promoted to replace Balding, whom Holden said is likely to stay on as an assistant.

"I'm sure Peter will stay involved somehow," Holden said. "He just felt this was a good time to step aside and let someone else take over."

Punahou has a 56-match win streak in regular and post-season competition the past three seasons. Balding also guided the Buffanblu to state titles in 1989 and 1990, and he coached the Buffanblu girls to a state championship in 1993.

Balding played on three state title teams for Punahou (1974, '75 and '76) and also was a member of Pepperdine's NCAA championship team in 1978.

"Pete's teams were always well-coached and well-prepared," Holden said in a statement. "He ... consistently finds ways to challenge his players to compete at the highest level and is a great role model for them."

Tune, who played on the Buffanblu's 1992 state title team and also for the University of Hawai'i and Pepperdine, had been an assistant to Balding since 2001.

He was Saint Louis' head coach in 1999 and 2000.
