Signing ceremony for NW Hawaiian Islands today

Advertiser Staff

The signing ceremony for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument Memorandum of Agreement takes place at 11 a.m. today.

U.S.Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez, U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne and Gov. Linda Lingle will be particpating. The signing is at the State Capitol Building in the Executive Chambers.

On June 15, President Bush signed an historic proclamation that created the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, the world's largest marine conservation area off the coast of the northern Hawaiian Islands.

The new monument is being cooperatively managed by the state, the Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Interior's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
