Kahuku Hospital board stays bankruptcy decision

The Kahuku Hospital board of directors voted unanimously today to temporarily suspend filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to give the state time to acquire the rural hospital or affiliate it with the Hawai'i Health Systems Corp.

The decision opens the door to keeping the debt-ridden hospital operating beyond its scheduled Dec. 31 closure, provided the state meets several conditions, including the release of $500,000 in emergency funding as promised.
