1958: Matson Navigation Co. sells its four Waikiki hotels to Sheraton Corp. of America for $18 million. At the time, it was the largest single corporate sale in Hawai'i history. The hotels were the Royal Hawaiian, Surfrider, Moana and Princess Ka'iulani.
1979: The University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball team wins the AIAW National Invitational volleyball title, the first national championship won by a UH team. And, the University of Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team wins the AIAW college division title.
1980: Former Beatle John Lennon is shot to death in front of his luxury apartment building in Manhattan by Honolulu resident Mark David Chapman.
1987: Wailuku Agribusiness, which had been growing sugar cane on Maui since 1862, announces it will switch to pineapple cultivation.
1987: Ferry service begins for Moloka'i workers commuting to jobs on Maui.
