Lingle raised record $6.7 million

Gov. Linda Lingle's campaign raised $167,000 in the last two weeks before the November election, pushing the total she collected from contributions, interest and other funds to a record $6.7 million.

The Republican governor spent a record $6.4 million on her re-election, leaving more than $369,000 in cash on hand through early November. Lingle defeated former Mililani state Sen. Randall Iwase by 62 percent to 35 percent.

Iwase, a Democrat, raised $82,000 in the last two weeks before the vote for a total of about $411,000 for his campaign, according to state campaignfinance reports filed yesterday. He spent about $417,000, leaving his campaign nearly $6,000 in debt.



HMSA WORKERS HELP THE NEEDY

Hawaii Medical Service Association employees recently made a Thanksgiving donation to the Hawaii Foodbank to help alleviate hunger during the holidays. Donations included $11,570 and 4,631 pounds of nonperishable food.

Over a four-week period, teams of HMSA employees challenged each other to collect food items and bring them to work for weekly weigh-ins. Teams were motivated by a friendly competition between departments.

RUNAWAY, 15, AND DAUGHTER SOUGHT

The public is being asked to help find a 15-year-old girl who ran away from state foster care, according to the state Department of Human Services.

Chevelle Epstein-Peroff is 5 feet tall and about 110 pounds. She has black hair and black eyes. The girl probably has her 15-month-old daughter, Kelly Lyn, with her and is believed to frequent Wai'anae, Kapolei and 'Ewa Beach.

Anyone with information about Chevelle Epstein-Peroff is urged to call police.




HALAWA

ROBBER ATTACKS MANAGER IN STORE

A gunman robbed a Halawa convenience store early yesterday and hit a woman manager on the head with an object, possibly a gun.

The robbery at Fastop's Stadium Mall location, 4510 Salt Lake Blvd., was reported at 4:57 a.m.

The woman, 46, was not seriously injured. The robber fled.




O'AHU

MAN CHARGED WITH SEX ASSAULT

A 47-year-old man was charged yesterday with six counts of first- and five counts of third-degree sexual assault involving a juvenile. Timothy Withers was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The alleged assaults were reported Tuesday to school officials, who contacted police.




WAHIAWA

DRUG SUSPECT TURNS HIMSELF IN

A Kailua man indicted by an O'ahu grand jury on two counts of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug voluntarily surrendered to police at the Wahiawa station Wednesday night.

Dean Keolaokalani Lai, 24, was booked at 7:30 p.m. and was released after posting $50,000 bail.




'EWA BEACH

MAN, 78, ARRESTED IN SEX COMPLAINT

A 78-year-old 'Ewa Beach man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of touching a 49-year-old woman inappropriately.

Police said the woman filed a complaint and identified the suspect as the man who allegedly fondled her.

Police found and arrested the man about 8 a.m. on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. He was released without being charged, pending further investigation.
