Power failure hits Waikiki

Advertiser Staff

Some 184 customers in Waikiki were left without power about 5 p.m. when fuses exploded on an above-ground power cable.

Power was restored to nearly all the customers, which included condominiums and hotels, by 6:47 p.m., said Hawaiian Electric Company spokesman Jose Dizon.

No one was injured in the small explosion. During the power failure, police directed traffic at three affected intersections with Kalakaua Avenue: Lewers Street, Seaside Avenue and Royal Hawaiian Avenue.

Dizon said passersby likely heard a loud boom when the fuses exploded. He said the cause is under investigation.
