Marathon weather: sunny and breezy

Advertiser Staff

There's good news and bad on the weather front for the thousands of runners planning to compete in the Honolulu Marathon Sunday morning.

The good news is the temperature will be nice and low at the start of the race, probably in the low 70s. And, the mercury is not expected to rise much beyond the low 80s throughout the day.

The bad news is that a high pressure system north of the islands will keep moderate trade winds, in the 10 to 15 mph range, blowing through much of the coming week. The dry and stable air mass will keep clouds and showers to a minimum through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service, although the skies could turn a bit misty beginning Monday.

Bucking a headwind out to Hawai'i Kai may be a problem for some runners, although a tailwind will work in their favor on the way back. The bright sun — and the dehydration that comes with it — could be a hurdle, too.

Following is a more detailed look at the next few days:

Today, sunny and breezy. Highs 77 to 83. East winds 15 to 25 mph.

Tonight, mostly clear. Lows 65 to 71. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.

Sunday, sunny, highs 77 to 83. East winds 10 to 15 mph.

Sunday night, mostly clear. Lows 65 to 71. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.

Monday, mostly sunny. Highs 77 to 83. East winds 10 to 15 mph.

Monday night, partly cloudy with isolated showers. Lows 65 to 71. Northeast winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent.
