1899: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the foundations of the main building of the new brewery are in position. One hundred and fifteen tons of brewing machinery were expected in a couple of months on the schooner St. Catherine, which was coming around the Horn from New York.
1921: The Advertiser reports that before adjourning, the convention of the Hawaii Laborers Association (Japanese Federation of Labor) adopted resolutions for the formation of a large labor union of workers of all races.
1933: Liquor may now be sold legally in Hawai'i, The Advertiser reports. The 18th Amendment had been repealed on Dec. 5, but there was confusion about whether it applied in the Territory of Hawai'i. A federal judge in Hawai'i had ruled on Dec. 7 that it did, but that surprised the U.S. Department of Justice. A day later, however, the federal government decided not to appeal the judge's decision, and the O'ahu liquor commission said it would issue liquor licenses.
1941: Gasoline rationing begins in Hawai'i. Civilians with non-defense status could buy up to half a tank. Business establishments were to close at 4:30 p.m. so employees could get home before blackout.
1945: Nearly 1,500 relatives and friends attend a memorial service at McKinley High School to honor the O'ahu soldiers of the 442nd Infantry Regiment and 100th Battalion who gave their lives in World War II.
1948: An Air Force B-36 lands in Texas after a nonstop round-trip flight of more than 8,000 miles, during which it "bombed" Hawai'i. The plane had flown over O'ahu undetected between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 7, and dropped "a useful bomb load" into the ocean off Honolulu without being detected by the military here.
1985: Ronald Rewald is sentenced to 80 years in federal prison, fined $352,000 and ordered to pay restitution of up to $13 million. He was con-victed of 94 counts of fraud, perjury and tax evasion in connection with his phony investment firm, Bishop Baldwin Rewald Dillingham & Wong. He was released from prison in 1995.
1999: The Hawai'i Supreme Court unanimously upholds state marriage laws, overturning a decision in 1996 by Circuit Judge Kevin Chang that prohibiting same-sex couples from marrying violated the state Constitution.
