USC trounces Rainbow Wahine

Advertiser Staff

Shay Murphy had 19 points and 10 rebounds as Southern California defeated the University of Hawai'i, 72-52, yesterday in a non-conference women's basketball game at Los Angeles.

Murphy scored the first five points of the second half — on a 3-pointer and a jumper — as the Trojans (4-4) pulled away to a 43-30 lead they would not relinquish. Murphy's 3-pointer with about six minutes remaining gave USC its largest lead at 65-42.

Allison Jaskowiak and Chloe Kerr each added 10 points for the Trojans.

Reserve Iwona Zagrobelna led the Rainbow Wahine (4-4) with 11 points, all coming after the intermission. She was the only UH player in double figures as coach Jim Bolla turned to a platoon system after falling behind early in the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine hit their first four 3-point attempts and led 17-16. But Murphy, who scored in double figures for the 33rd game in a row, hit a 3-pointer to put USC ahead to stay.

Despite its torrid start from beyond the arc — including senior center Brittany Grice's first career 3-pointer — UH would make just five of its next 27 from 3-point range, and finished the game shooting a season-low 28 percent (18 for 65).

The Rainbow Wahine return home to host the Paradise Classic, starting Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
