  • An intensive three-day professional grant-proposal writing workshop, sponsored by The Grant Institute, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Wednesday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. Titled "GRANTS 101," the course includes the basic components of writing a grant proposal, successful approaches and the "do's and don'ts" of grant writing.   • Gay in the workplace? The second in a series of "talk story" sessions about the issues LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) employees face in the workplace will be presented tomorrow, by national LGBT labor organization Pride At Work. Among topics to be discussed will be job rights, healthcare, job discrimination, domestic partnership issues, transgender medical coverage, union protection and organization of a local gay-friendly labor organization. The discussion, "OUT AT WORK, OUT IN OUR UNIONS: A Talk Story Session About the Issues LGBT Workers Face In the Workplace And In Our Unions in Hawai'i," is scheduled 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Center for Labor Education and Research, University of Hawai'i at West O'ahu College, Building 400, Pearl City.     "Kapolei's Growing Job Centers" will be the focus of the West O'ahu Economic Development Association's annual luncheon conference today. At the conference — 11:30 a.m. at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa, Ocean Ballroom — attendees will hear updates from government and industry experts on Kapolei's expanding economy and its impact on job growth. Speakers include:

  • Mayor Mufi Hannemann, speaking on what transit means to Kapolei.

  • Brad Myers, president of Kapolei Property Development (a James Campbell Co. affiliate), who will discuss Kapolei's major job centers.

  • Scott Mitchell, executive vice president and industrial division manager for Colliers Monroe Friedlander, who will discuss Kapolei's growing industrial market.

  • Todd Hedrick, director of leasing and property management for The MacNaughton Group, and Mike Hamasu, director of consulting and research for Colliers Monroe Friedlander, will participate in a panel discussion on Kapolei's retail industry future.
