Kaua'i man arrested after standoff with police

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i—A 58-year-old Kapa'a man was cited on numerous criminal counts after a standoff yesterday afternoon with police.

Authorities said the man will face counts of terroristic threats on a police officer, attempted assault on a police officer and disorderly conduct after more than four hours of confrontation.

A neighbor called police yesterday morning to report the man was throwing things from his house. When police arrived, he threw knives and other objects at them, displayed a sword and threatened to shoot officers with an automatic rifle, according to a county press release.

Negotiators were unable to resolve the issue, and the department's Special Services Team entered the home and took the man into custody, police said. There were no injuries.
