Revived runner returns to marathon finish line today

Advertiser Staff

This morning at 8:20, Koji Takano, the 39-year-old Japanese runner who suffered a heart attack at the Honolulu Marathon finish line, will return to that spot where doctors revived him.

Takano will receive his finisher's certificate from marathon president Jim Barahal before he goes back to Tokyo. Race doctors used an automatic external defibrillator to shock and restart Takano's heart after he collapsed at the finish line. He had just completed his eighth Honolulu Marathon in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 34 seconds.

Unresponsive, he was carried to the medical tent next to the finish line where doctors applied the AED.
