Pipeline Masters postponed

Advertiser Staff

The Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters was postponed yesterday because of a declining swell at the Banzai Pipeline.

One more day of competition is required to determine a champion. A new swell is expected to hit O'ahu's North Shore tomorrow, although strong winds could affect the quality of the waves.

Kaua'i's Andy Irons needs to advance through his third-round heat to clinch the 2006 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing championship.

The Pipeline Masters is the third of three events in the Triple Crown series.

Irons, who already owns three Triple Crown championships, won the first contest at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach and placed third in the second contest at Sunset Beach.

Irons is one of 15 Hawai'i surfers still in contention in the Pipeline Masters.

For status of the contest, call 596-7873 or visit www.triplecrownofsurfing.com.

KAILUA'S BYRNES FIGHTS IN CALIFORNIA TONIGHT

Steve Byrnes of Kailua will fight Logan Clark of Minnesota on the undercard of tonight's UFC Fight Night mixed martial arts event at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, Calif.

Both fighters are undefeated in the middleweight division (185 pounds). Byrnes is 6-0, with all of his previous wins in Hawai'i. Clark is 7-0.

The main bouts on the card will be televised nationally on the Spike TV cable station, but the Byrnes/Clark bout is not expected to make the telecast.

Diego Sanchez of New Mexico will face Joe Riggs of Arizona in the main event.

The event is part of the prestigious Ultimate Fighting Championship organization.

Elsewhere, Eugene Jackson of California defeated Hawai'i's Ronald Jhun in the Strikeforce mixed martial arts event last Saturday at San Jose, Calif.

Jackson defeated Jhun by choke submission, 2 minutes, 1 second, into the first round to win the Strikeforce's United States middleweight (185 pounds) championship.
