Washington freshman libero Tamari Miyashiro, a 2005 Kalani graduate, was named to the Seattle Regional all-tournament team.

Miyashiro recorded a team-high 18 digs in a 30-27, 30-24, 28-30 and 30-26 win over Penn State Saturday night in the regional championship. Washington, along with Stanford, Nebraska and UCLA advanced to the final four.

"(Miyashiro) is a freshman, and the influence she has on our team is unbelievable," UW coach Jim McLaughlin said on the school's Web site. "She's the best volleyball player I've ever coached in every way, shape and form. She made some very good plays."

Miyashiro, who amassed 637 digs this season, needs 29 more to tie the school record for digs in a single season.

Third-ranked Washington (29-4) advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament in Omaha, Neb., and will face second-ranked Stanford Thursday.

Junior defensive specialist Ashley Aratani ('Iolani '04) had six digs and a service ace in the regional championship. Aratani and Miyashiro are the only remaining volleyball players from Hawai'i in the tournament.

MEN'S SWIMMING

  • Stanford senior Hongzhe Sun ('Iolani '03) was named the Pac-10 Conference's Men's Swimmer of the Month for November.

Sun posted NCAA qualifying times in wins in the 200 backstroke (1:43.30) and the 200 individual medley (1:46.55) at the Speedo Cup Nov. 16 to 18. He won those events for the third straight year.

Sun also swam the leadoff leg on the 400 medley relay team, which broke a 14-year meet record with an NCAA qualifying time of 3:14.54, and the 200 medley relay, which placed second after posting an NCAA qualifying time of 1:28.88.

Since the Speedo Cup, Sun improved both his 200 back and 200 IM times while competing at the Texas Invitational on Nov. 30. During the meet, Sun recorded a season-best and NCAA "A" qualifying time of 1:46.19 in the 200 IM to place second in the event, and clocked a time of 1:41.98 in the 200 back on Dec. 2.

It is the second monthly honor for Sun.

    FOOTBALL

  • Oregon State senior offensive guard Jeremy Perry (Kahuku '04) will miss the Brut Sun Bowl with a left knee sprain, head coach Mike Riley announced Saturday.

Perry was injured late in the victory over Hawai'i Dec. 2 at Aloha Stadium. He started 12 of the 13 regular season games.

"It's very disappointing news," Riley said in the release. "Jeremy is a very good player and a key component on our offensive line. We have some capable backups who have already shown that they can do an outstanding job in his place, but we will miss Jeremy."

  • Portland State junior offensive lineman Brennan Carvalho (Kamehameha '04 of Kapa'a) was named to the 25-player Walter Camp 1-AA All-America football team.

The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Division 1-AA football schools.

Carvalho, a three-year starter, was a first-team all-Big Sky Conference selection the past two seasons.

  • El Camino (Calif.) Junior College freshman linebacker Kaipo Sarkissian (Kamehameha '06) helped the team to its first California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics football championship since 1971.

El Camino defeated City College of San Francisco, 49-35, Saturday.

Sarkissian was third on the team with 67 tackles (32 solo). He also had a 7-yard sack, four tackles for losses of 14 yards and an interception this season.

  • Colorado junior inside linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) was presented with the Tom McMahon Award for dedication and work ethic at CU's annual banquet.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Holy Names (Oakland, Calif.) sophomore guard Aaron Kanno (Mililani '04) scored nine points, including 6-of-6 free-throw shooting, in a 76-63 win over Hawai'i Pacific Dec. 2.

  • Colorado School of Mines sophomore guard Kyle Pape ('Iolani '05) scored a team-high 14 points in a 61-46 loss to Western State Dec. 7.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) junior guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) earned her second straight California Pacific Conference Player of the Week honor of the season.

Lee leads the Cal Pac Conference in scoring and rebounding, averaging 21.6 points and nine rebounds per game. Against Dominican, Lee tied a career high with 29 points. She is only three points shy of being the first Menlo College women's basketball player to score 1,000 points.

  • Cal Lutheran junior point guard Tiffiny Shim (Kamehameha '03) scored a game-high 21 points in a 68-57 win over La Sierra Dec. 2. She also had six rebounds and five assists.

Senior guard/forward Caroline Beddow (Mid-Pacific '03) and sophomore guard Cheryl Lee (Maryknoll '05) also play for CLU.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Oregon senior forward Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01) was named to the Soccer Buzz all-West Region first team.

  • Denver freshman midfielder Lizzy Carlson (Punahou '06) was named to the Central Region all-Freshman team.

    CORRECTION

  • UCLA junior safety Matt Culver's (Punahou '03) name was omitted from a list of Division I football players on the Mainland who are playing in bowl games. UCLA plays Florida State in the Emerald Bowl.

  • BYU freshman defensive lineman Kalama Kaluhiokalani (Kamehameha '06 of Kane'ohe) and Hala Paongo (Kahuku '99) were also omitted from the list. BYU plays Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl.
