Local Democrats push for Obama in '08

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Democrats who want U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008 asked Island residents today to sign a national online petition to draft the senator into the race.

They urged Island residents who support Obama, who was born in Honolulu and graduated from Punahou School, to add their names to the petition at DraftObama.org.

"It is time for hope, and that's the message that Barack Obama carries and that's why we're all so enthusiastic about participating," former Makiki state Rep. Brian Schatz, of the Hawai'i Draft Obama steering committee, said at a news conference at the state Capitol this morning.

Obama, who has family in the Islands, is expected to visit for the holidays.
