'Aiea overpass opens to pedestrians ahead of schedule

Advertiser Staff

The 'Aiea overpass reopened ahead of schedule this afternoon to pedestrian traffic.

The overpass was damaged Sept. 5 when it was struck by a large backhoe being carried on an Army trailer and was scheduled to reopen to pedestrians tomorrow.

Immediately after it opened this afternoon, students began using the walkway, said Scott Ishikawa, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

Alvah A. Scott Elementary school is located on the makai side of the overpass and 'Aiea High School is on the mauka end.

Transportation officials were notifying school officials today that the overpass will be available to students going to school tomorrow.
