Kaua`i activist injured in traffic wreck

LIHU`E, Kaua`i—Community activist Ray Chuan and his wife, Eugenia, were injured yesterday in an accident that closed Kuhio Highway near Princeville for nearly three hours.

Police said Chuan, 82, was driving a northbound car that crossed the center line about 1:30 p.m. and hit a Kaua'i Freight tractor trailer driven by Joel Kaluahine, 49. The trailer jackknifed. Kaluahine was not injured.

Chuan and his wife, 85, were taken to Wilcox Hospital, where they were reported in fair condition.

Police reopened the highway shortly after 4 p.m.
