1911: Newly dredged Pearl Harbor opens. The armored cruiser California, the flagship of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, is the first ship to sail into the harbor. Queen Lili'uokalani was on board the ship as a guest.
1941: Gasoline rationing cards are issued.
1942: The phoenix fountain is torn down in Kapi'olani Park. The fountain, which had been made in Japan, was presented to the city 25 years earlier to commemorate the coronation of Emperor Yoshihito.
1963: Angry real estate dealers charge that Bishop Estate and not the dealers was responsible for racial discrimination in the sale of Kahala homes.
1967: Hawai'i's Statuary Hall Commission decides the controversial Marisol Escobar statue of Father Damien will be Hawai'i's second statue in National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.
1975: The popular Chart House restaurant on the second floor of the Ilikai Marina Towers is destroyed by fire.
1978: Revered hula dancer Iolani Luahine is laid to rest at Hawaiian Memorial Park. As the funeral procession arrived at the cemetery on a bright, sunny day, a brisk wind picks up and rain hits with a sudden fury.
1991: Three people are killed in flash flooding near Anahola on Kaua'i.
2003: Saddam Hussein is found by U.S. troops in an under-ground hideout in Iraq.
