State Board of Education chooses officers

Longtime member Karen Knudsen was unanimously elected to a one-year term as chairwoman of the Board of Education.

John Penebacker will be first vice chairman and Herbert Watanabe will be second vice chairman.

Knudsen, who has been on the board since 1990, has previously served as chairperson, as has Watanabe. Penebacker was a board member from 1980 to 1988 and was reelected this November.

"Our current Board of Education is a dynamic set of talented individuals with a wealth of experience -- including former legislators, a congressman, attorneys, career educators, school and library system administrators, a high school student and community activists," Knudsen said in a release. "It is my privilege to lead such a distinguished group and work to channel our energies and expertise into positive solutions to assist our public schools and libraries."
