The Audubon Society is looking for bird lovers to help with its Christmas Bird Count, which is 107 years old this year and will be in its 63rd year in Hawai'i.

The bird count covers all 50 states and every province in Canada, as well as areas in Central and South America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. The results of previous bird counts nationwide from 1900 through last year are available online.

Volunteers will fan out across the state during the coming weeks to record what kind and how many birds they see in specific areas. The information goes into a massive database that helps record status and trends of the nation's birdlife.

There are counts on several islands starting this weekend and continuing through the end of the year. Vounteers are asked to donate $5 each to help cover the cost of processing the information and storing it. There is no fee for children.

The count for each island and neighborhood will be led by an experienced birder, and they're looking for people of varying levels of expertise, including beginners.
