1931: Fifty Hawaiian and concert musicians and vocalists take part in a program aired via KGU radio across the Mainland.
1953: Circuit Judge Calvin McGregor orders the property of the Japanese Language School returned. It had been confiscated during the war, and the deed to the property had been turned over to the territory on Aug. 24, 1943. The judge rules the conveyance of the deed had been illegal.
1959: A state Board of Health vote clears the way for construction of Castle Memorial Hospital.
1965: Wilfred Tsukiyama resigns as chief justice of the Hawai'i Supreme Court because of ill health. He was the first person of Japanese ancestry to be named a chief justice in the United States.
1967: A tornado rips through the plantation village of Kaumakani on Kaua'i's southwest coast, leaving 126 people homeless.
1970: The opening of the new H-1 segment between Halawa and Pearl City causes a massive tie-up for evening homebound Leeward commuters. Motorists were confused by the freeway changes, and the city said the state did not brief area police on the traffic changes.
