Rough surf keeps lifeguards busy

City lifeguards in Waikiki made plenty of rescues Sunday and Monday due to unseasonal high winter surf on O'ahu's south shore.Bryan Cheplic, City Emergency Services spokesman, said lifeguards recorded three rescues and 20 assists Sunday while Ocean Safety Rescue 1 lifeguards on jet skis had 50 assists, of which 37 were participants in the annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim event.
There were also four surfing-related accidents but none involved injuries requiring hospital treatment, Cheplic said.
Lifeguards made nine rescues Monday, while the jet ski unit had 10 assists, Cheplic said.
