Kamehameha's student chess team wins national title

Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha Elementary School's chess team this month took first place in the K-6 Blitz Team Tournament in the 2006 National K-12/Collegiate Championship and in Florida.

Team members — sixth-graders Tristan Kaonohi and Likeke Aipa and fifth-grader Nathaniel Brown — also won several individual trophies during the blitz event, led by an eighth-place overall finish by Kaonohi. It was their second time to compete in a national scholastic event. Also competing from Hawai'i were William Chen, a seventh-grader from Punahou and Kapena "Blaise" Lum, a sixth-grader from Maryknoll School among the 1,540 players from 40 states.
