Young Brothers seeks 10.7% rate hike for shipments

Advertiser Staff

Young Brothers Ltd. is asking the state Public Utilities Commission to grant an average 10.7 percent rate increase and to allow the company to begin using a fuel surcharge to adjust rates when diesel prices fluctuate.

The company said money from the higher rates would go to fund improvements to its interisland barge service and is anticipated to be implemented in July. The company said it also will request an automatic fuel price adjustment when fuel prices increase or decrease by 15 cents a gallon.

Young Brothers most recent rate increase occurred in September, when it raised prices by an average of 5.5 percent.
