Hikers were from California, authorities say

Associated Press

WAILUA — Two female hikers killed today when they fell 250 to 300 feet from the 'Opaeka'a Falls trail were from California, Kaua'i Fire Chief Robert Westerman said.

The women were found at the base of a cliff, about 35 feet from the waterfall, Westerman said.

One of two other hikers who discovered the women ran to the trail head and called 911 around 1 p.m., he said.

Rescue specialists from the Lihu'e fire station, firefighters from the Kapa'a station, police officers and state Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel responded to the call.

The women were pronounced dead at the scene, Westerman said.

Their names weren't released.
