Hawai'i 4th biggest pot-growing state

Advertiser Staff

Marijuana is Hawai'i's top crop, with an estimated 2.4 million pounds of the illegal plant worth $3.82 billion being grown in the state this year, according to a new report.

The report, Marijuana Production in the United States (2006), by a marijuana public policy analyst Jon Gettman, said Hawai'i ranks as the fourth-biggest pot-growing state in the nation. Only California, Tennessee, and Kentucky had higher production.

The report also identifies Hawai'i as the top marijuana-exporting state in terms of ratio of production to in-state use. About 22 times more marijuana is grown here than is consumed here.

Gettman is a proponent of dropping marijuana from the federal list of hard-core Schedule 1 drugs, which includes other prohibited drugs such as heroin and LSD.
