Pearl Harbor had been dredged, but contractors found a shoal that had not been removed and projected into the channel fairway, the Dec. 19, 1911, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported.

1960: Two sets of presidential electors cast Hawai'i's three electoral votes in a historic 'Iolani Palace ceremony that was without precedent in the nation. The three Republican electors, recognized by the state as the official electors, cast ballots for the Nixon-Lodge ticket. They were followed by the three Democrats who voted for Kennedy and Johnson on the basis of a partial recount of Hawai'i's presidential votes that showed their candidate leading. The recount ultimately showed Kennedy carrying the state by 115 votes. Congress, with then-Vice President Richard Nixon presiding, accepted the Democratic elector votes in January.

1966: A workman is killed and two others are injured when a crane boom collapses at the new state Capitol site.

1986: Five hundred Kalapana residents are evacuated as lava surges across the Kalapana Gardens subdivision. Twelve homes are destroyed.

1987: The University of Hawai'i Wahine defeat Stanford to win their fourth national volleyball championship.

1992: Hamakua Sugar Co. announces it will close March 31, 1993.

1998: The U.S. House of Representatives impeaches President Clinton, voting to put him on trial for his actions in concealing a sexual affair.
