CHAMINADE WINS NATIONAL HONOR

The Corporation for National and Community Service recently named Chaminade University to President Bush's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The Honolulu university was recognized for its outstanding work in curricular and co-curricular service-learning efforts, exemplary volunteer opportunities, efforts specific to Hurricane Katrina, and its institutionalized commitment to service and volunteerism.



DENTIST ACHIEVES BOARD CERTIFICATION

Dr. Janel Ancheta recently completed her board certification examinations and is now a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Ancheta practices dentistry in 'Aiea.

The mission of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is to verify to the public and to the health professions that a pediatric dentist has successfully completed both an advanced educational program accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and a voluntary examination process designed to validate the knowledge, applications and performance required to delivery proficient pediatric dental care.



HPU OFFICIAL HELPS YOUTHS SET GOALS

In recognition of his work to strengthen high school-college partnerships in schools with underserved student populations, Hawai'i Pacific University's associate director of admissions, Scott Liedtke, has received the Foundation for Excellent Schools Mario Pena Award.

Liedtke has helped coordinate visits and programs from numerous Hawai'i schools. He was recognized for providing exciting educational opportunities designed to elevate the aspirations of Hawai'i youths.



DOCTOR HONORED FOR COMPASSION

The state Department of Health STD/AIDS Prevention Branch has announced that the third annual Suzanne Richmond-Crum Award was recently presented to Dr. Cyril Goshima, director of the AIDS Education Project at John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

He was cited as one of the first physicians willing to care for HIV-positive or AIDS-diagnosed patients and for caring for those living with HIV/AIDS in the most compassionate and dignified manner possible since he began his practice.



JAPAN CONFERS HONOR ON ISLE MAN

Benjamin Fukumoto, retired from IBM and GTE Hawaiian Tel, and past chairman of the board of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, has received the prestigious Imperial decoration from the government of Japan. The decoration was conferred for his contribution to the promotion of U.S.-Japan economic relations and for enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.



UH-MANOA OFFICIAL WINS RECOGNITION

Jan Javinar, University of Hawai'i-Manoa director of co-curricular activities, programs and services, has received the 2006 Don and Noel Hinde Distinguished Service Award for the western United States and Pacific region.

The award recognizes longtime student union and student activities professionals who have made exceptional contributions to their organizations.

Javinar has been with UH since 1982, mostly at Manoa, but also at Honolulu Community College.
