Money can't buy everything, but it can buy a little peace of mind for those who struggle to keep their families intact.

Hawai'i is a generous community, and this year donations of goods to The Advertiser Christmas Fund have surpassed last year's level.

But the monetary donations are lagging behind the 2005 benchmark. Less than $90,000 has come in, compared with $100,000 at this point last year.

Helping Hands Hawai'i, the nonprofit that coordinates the charity drive, can direct funds throughout the year to cover some families' expenses.

The end of the year hits everyone's wallet. But even small contributions of $20 or $50 can make a big difference if it can help families take care of the bare essentials. Everyone should have some hope this holiday season.
