Hawaiian Electric wants 7% increase in rates

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric Co. said it is seeking an overall 7 percent rate increase that would take effect next fall at the earliest.

The utility said it filed the request with the state Public Utilities Commission because of costs for large projects as well as ongoing operating and maintenance programs. If the request is approved Hawaiian Electric said the typical O'ahu household using 600 kilowatts a month will see the bill increase to $117.85 from $111.05.

The request includes a new tiered structure that rewards customers who practice conservation by giving lower rates for lower monthly usage.
