Airports open extra parking for holiday travel

Expecting increased traffic for this holiday weekend and next, the state Department of Transportation has added valet service at the Honolulu International Airport and is urging travelers to take a taxi, shuttle or get dropped off for their flights to avoid the parking crunch.

The DOT is also planning to open additional parking for holiday travelers and advises to get to the airport 30 to 45 minutes earlier than usual to find adequate parking and time to check in.

Valet parking rates are $20 for the first day and $10 for each subsequent days.

At the Kahului Airport on Maui, additional parking is provided at a nearby lot with shuttle service to the terminal.The charge is $5 per day for the overflow lot and the shuttle runs through Jan. 3 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

At Kona International on the Big Island, overflow parking will be along U'u Street, as well as a designed graded area off U'u Street. The Pao'o Street lot will be reopened Monday through the New Year and beyond.

At Hilo Airport on the Big Island, overflow parking will be in the grass lots located on both ends of the regular parking lot fronting the airport terminal.

At Lihue Airport on Kaua'i, alternate parking will be in the gravel lots located at both ends of the regular parking lot.
