The Dec. 23, 1898, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on a Christmas program for children at Palama Chapel.

1931: Mutual Telephone begins commercial telephone service between Hawai'i and the Mainland. The inaugural ceremony was held in the throne room of 'Iolani Palace. Immediately after the ceremony, some 50 people who had registered in advance began calling friends and relatives on the Mainland.

1957: A Navy WV-2 Super-Constellation with 24 persons aboard crashes into the ocean about 25 miles north of Kahuku Point. Only four survived. The plane was based at Barbers Point.

1966: Four colorful little family-operated stores are extensively damaged when a ramshackle old landmark at Pi'ikoi and Kina'u streets burns.

1969: A prison guard is stabbed to death by an inmate at the State Prison.

1967: Thomas Hamilton resigns as University of Hawai'i president "as a matter of principle" over the Oliver Lee case.

1970: Some 2,000 ILWU members ratify a new contract with Neighbor Island hotels, ending a 76-day strike.

1982: In what many consider the biggest upset in college basketball, Chaminade University defeats No. 1-ranked Virginia, 77-72, at Blaisdell Arena.

1994: Local big-wave surfer and television personality Mark Foo dies after a wipeout in 15- to 18-foot waves at Maverick's beach at Half Moon Bay, Calif.
