1927: The Advertiser notes, with regret, the passing of the Kuokoa, the Hawaiian language newspaper, which was founded in 1861. For years it had a circulation unequalled by any other newspaper published in Hawai'i. It had been owned by The Advertiser since 1898, but because of declining circulation had become an "expensive luxury" for the paper.

1979: Thomas Hamilton, who was the popular and highly regarded president of the University of Hawai'i during what has been called the institution's "Golden Age" in the 1960s, dies at the age of 65. He arrived at UH in 1963 from the presidency of the State University of New York and led during a period of accomplishment and modernization at UH.

2001: Myron B. "Pinky" Thompson, who fought for the betterment of Native Hawaiians for more than 30 years, dies at the age of 70. He was a former Bishop Estate trustee, helped create the Hawaiian Health Care System and stepped forward in 1977 to revitalize the Polynesian Voyaging Society. He also helped create Alu Like to get federal money to help Native Hawaiians in job training, health, housing, education and native rights.
