Man, 44, dies at swimming pool

A 44-year-old man apparently drowned yesterday morning at the Pahoa community swimming pool.

Big Island Fire Capt. Alex Almeida said when firefighters arrived at the pool about 9:20 a.m., a lifeguard was performing CPR on the victim.

The man, a resident of the Big Island, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center.

His identity was not released.

MOTORCYCLIST DIES FROM INJURIES

A 22-year-old Honolulu man who was critically injured Saturday night in a motorcycle accident on the H-1 Freeway died yesterday.

The crash happened at about 10 p.m. when the man was driving his 1999 red R-1 motorcycle westbound near the Middle Street offramp to the Airport Viaduct.

Police said the man, who was wearing a helmet, was trying to turn when he struck the curb and a guardrail and was thrown onto the road.

He died at The Queen's Medical Center.

Speed may have been a factor, police said.



ANDRADE TO HEAD POLICE COMMISSION

Boyd S. Andrade Sr., was elected 2007 chairman of the Honolulu Police Commission on Dec. 20.

Keith Y. Amemiya, who joined the commission in October, was elected vice chairman.

A formal ceremony in the mayor's office is pending.
