A Dec. 23, 1957, plane crash that killed 20 people off O'ahu was caused by human error, The Advertiser reported on Dec. 26, 1957.

1908: Claus Spreckels, known as the sugar king, dies in San Francisco.

1931: Kalaniana'ole Highway opens and crowds of motorists drive around the southern end of the island for the first time. The road was not officially completed, but the roadbed was laid and was passable.

1946: Two Kulani Prison Camp inmates die and 18 are hospitalized after a shellac alcohol drinking party at the camp.


1972: Former President Harry Truman dies in Kansas City, Mo., at the age of 88.
