The cornerstone of the new City Hall was laid on Dec. 27, 1928.

1935: Army pilots drop six tons of TNT on a Mauna Loa lava flow in an attempt to alter the course of the flow, which was headed toward Hilo.

1948: A federal jury awards trustees of the S.M. Damon Estate $326,205 for the 195 acres of Moanalua land taken by the government as the site for the new Tripler General Hospital.

1957: Kaiser Foundation Hospitals announces plans for a hospital in Honolulu.

1973: The Rev. Robert Warner pleads guilty in the fire-bombing of the University of Hawai'i ROTC building in 1971. Warner had surrendered to federal authorities in New York.

1977: For lack of a star prosecution witness, the Kukui Plaza bribery charges against then-Mayor Frank Fasi and Harry C.C. Chung are dismissed. Fasi said the dismissal was the inevitable outcome of a "frame-up" by the state.
