Moped driver's condition upgraded at hospital

Advertiser Staff

A moped driver injured in a traffic accident on Kalaniana'ole Highway Wednesday night was upgraded from critical to stable condition at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

The 20-year-old Waimanalo man was driving south-bound when he ran into the back of a blue 2001 Chrysler Voyager van that had either slowed or stopped to allow another car onto the highway.

Police said the moped hit the left rear side of the van at 8:24 p.m., and the driver was ejected, suffering head injuries when he fell.

The moped driver was not wearing a helmet.

The van's driver, a 62-year-old woman also from Waimanalo, was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt.

It is not known if speed or alcohol were involved in the accident, police said.

Traffic was light and the street was dry when the accident occurred, police said.
