	The Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. announces its new steamer would be ready the next year.

1902: The last length of the Commercial Pacific Cable is laid at Waikiki Beach. The Advertiser reported several thousand people on the beach cheered as the heavily armored line came ashore. The first commercial cable message was sent to Hawai'i on Jan. 1, 1903.

1928: Work began on what was called the "hopeful project" of restoring a beach at Waikiki by artificial means — groins to deflect wave action.

1931: KGU broadcasts to the Mainland from the edge of Halema'uma'u crater. "The rumble and roar of breaking fissures and the crashing thunder of scores of fiery fountains were heard thousands of miles away almost as vividly as if the listener were standing in the heat and glare of the pit," The Advertiser wrote.

1960: Circuit Judge Ronald B. Jamieson rules that John F. Kennedy carried the state of Hawai'i in the presidential election by 115 votes.

1968: The Apollo 8 astronauts, the first humans to circle the moon, are greeted by 10,000 people at Hickam Air Force Base.

1978: About $100,000 in used coins was stolen from a Matson container as it sat in the company's container yard over the Christmas weekend, The Advertiser reported.

1995: The state begins sending inmates to Mainland prisons to relieve overcrowding. The first transfer involved 300 prisoners who were sent to Texas. The ACLU and inmates' families called the action cruel.

1997: A United Airlines jumbo jet on its way from Narita to Honolulu hits massive air turbulence, killing one woman and injuring at least 102 people, some of them seriously.
