'Chorus Line' creator to take part in Symphony Pops

Advertiser Staff

Legendary composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch, winner of virtually every entertainment award: four Grammys, three Oscars, a Tony, four Emmys and three Golden Globe awards, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for his groundbreaking show, "A Chorus Line," will join the Honolulu Symphony Pops for one night of music from Broadway and the silver screen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Tenor J. Mark McVey, who made his Broadway debut as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, joins Hamlisch and the Symphony Pops for the concert.

This concert will feature songs from Hamlisch's most popular productions, plus celebrated music from Hollywood's Golden Age and tributes to renowned Broadway and film composers such as Richard Rodgers.

Creator of the groundbreaking Broadway show "A Chorus Line," Hamlisch is a prolific composer of more than 40 film scores, including such hit soundtracks as "The Way We Were," for which he won Oscars for score and song, as well as "Sophie's Choice," "The Spy Who Loved Me," "The Mirror Has Two Faces" and "Ordinary People." He received a third Oscar for his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for "The Sting."

Known for his exuberant stage presence and humorous audience interaction, he has composed a multitude of Broadway productions, including "They're Playing Our Song," "Sweet Smell of Success" and "The Goodbye Girl." He has also scored such Woody Allen films as "Take the Money and Run" and "The April Fools."

Hamlisch served as musical director and arranger of Barbra Streisand's 1994 concert tour of the United States and England, as well as the television special "Barbra Streisand: The Concert," for which he received two of his Emmys. He also served in the same capacities for Streisand's Millennium concerts.

Hamlisch holds the position of Principal Pops Conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Principal Pops Conductor for the Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphony Orchestras.

Hamlisch is a graduate of both Juilliard and Queens College (where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree). "Music can make a difference. There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together. Music is truly an international language, and I hope to contribute by widening communication as much as I can," the composer said, in a statement released by the Honolulu Symphony Pops.
