Riley Wallace announced his retirement — effective at the end of this season — as the head coach of the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

Wallace made the announcement at a press conference today in the Stan Sheriff Center.

"To this day, I'm telling you I still have the energy to coach. I'm not retiring today by any means," Wallace said. "I'm stepping aside as the head coach at the end of the (season) — April 30, my contract ends."

Wallace, 65, is in his 20th season as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors. Hawai'i is 9-4 this season.

He has a career record of 325-256, and has the most wins of any men's basketball coach in UH history.

"There's no one to blame for this day," Wallace said. "It's time to move on ... I'm not being fired by any means. I'm stepping down as head coach of the University of Hawai'i."

Wallace said he met with the current Hawai'i players after Thursday's 66-53 victory over Tennessee-Martin.

"I met last night with my team and said we're not playing this season for Riley Wallace," he said. "We're playing for this team."
