Navy shipyard will close Tuesday to mourn Ford

Nearly 5,000 federal employees at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard will start the new year with an extra day off because the facility will be closed Tuesday in observance of the death of former President Gerald R. Ford, said shipyard spokesman Kerry Gershaneck.

A national day of mourning for Ford was ordered by President Bush. Except for deparments handling essential daily business and issues of national security, all federal executive departments, independent organizations and agencies will be closed.

The shipyard will resume normal operations on Wednesday. Employees who need additional information about Tuesday's closure should call their supervisors, Gershaneck said. They may also call 473-9000 for information.

Ford, the 38th president of the United States, died Tuesday at age 93.
