It means braving the fireworks-laden streets of Honolulu, but you can do it! Head for Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu at 1239 Olomea St. in Kalihi, where the annual Hatsumode welcomes a new Year of the Boar in the Japanese tradition from very early Monday (or, in a sense, very late tomorrow) until 5 p.m.

There's free toshikoshi soba (buckwheat noodles) from midnight until 1 a.m., and free ozoni mochi soup from midnight to 2 a.m. There's a shishimai lion dance and traditional new year's blessing, too.

All are welcome. It's free. Additional parking will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Damien Memorial School, with free shuttles to and from the shrine. 841-4755.
