Midway Atoll oil spill not posing a hazard to wildlife

Advertiser Staff

No pollution or animals fouled with oil have been found after an oil spill Thursday from a Japanese fishing vessel at Midway Atoll, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Surveys of the shoreline of all three islets in the area were done by the Coast Guard, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration after the Kotobuki Maru 38 was damaged.

Divers found scrapes and three small holes in one fuel tank. About 2,640 gallons of fuel was spilled in the incident, the Coast Guard said. The fishing vessel appears to have hit something near the channel entrance to the atoll.

The Kotobuki Maru 38 will remain at Midway until repairs are completed.
