It's New Year's Eve.

Tonight, amid fireworks and champagne, resolutions for 2007 will be whispered, screamed from lanai and rooftops or written down and burned in rituals. Of course, some of us will ignore the tradition entirely.

There are the usuals — lose weight, quit smoking. What kinds of resolutions (if any) do artists make? What gives them impetus to get through another year of making art? I asked artists throughout the state what they hope to accomplish in 2007.

Full-time artists sometimes work seven days a week and the going can be hard with no time off. For artists who also teach art, it means carving out time from a class schedule to develop ideas for exhibits. Artists who have nonart full-time jobs and families, have to scramble for whatever available time they can.

However they find time and energy to create, Island artists' work inspires us. Maybe their New Year's resolutions will, too.

Elsha Bohnert (assemblage): I resolve to keep a daily Gratitude Journal.

Gaye Chan (professor/photography/installation): I don't make New Year's resolutions. I tried it once when I was about 13 and resolved to be heterosexual. I realized I was being ridiculous and pathetic by Jan. 2.

Ka'ili Chun (sculpture/installation): I resolve to make the right choices and serve others with dignity and respect.

Jodi Endicott (sculpture/painting): To pursue my never-ending quest for great health, happy thoughts and special times with my family and friends ... all while enjoying chocolate.

Jim Erickson (glass): To get my art mojo back.

Kandi Everett (tattoo/printmaking/ painting): My artistic goals for 2007 are to avoid the concept of political correctness, sharpen the edges of my sable rapier, and draw and paint as many naked men as possible.

Dorothy Faison (painting): I resolve to do a series of drawings from every single one of the stacks of books in my studio — including "Popular Mechanics," "Bizarre Plants" and "Atlas of Surgical Operations" — in the coming year ... even if it takes 365 days!

Mary Flynn (painting/textiles): I will not leave any painting unfinished. It will either be completed, discarded or a first draft for a new project.

Sally French (Kaua'i, painting/printmaking): Trim the fat and prune the bushes.

Gallyn (stone lithography): My first and foremost resolution is to eat more soup.

Margo Goodwill (painting): Rediscover my muse and make an artwork I could get arrested for.

Jon Hamblin (painting/printmaking): I resolve to keep lying to myself about moderation and to develop a sky inside myself unfettered by spoken words and vows on paper.

Mike Harada (professor/painting /graphic arts): To watch more television and not make promises I can't keep. Aim high, that's what I say.

Janet Holaday (serigraphy): I resolve to spend more time outside in nature (where my inspiration comes from) in an observant meditative state.

Darius Homay (textiles): I resolve to resist the temptation to dip fluffy white dogs in my indigo vat and to quit two of my five jobs.

Pegge Hopper (painting): To try to stop getting so upset about politics (ignorance, incompetence and corruption) and enjoy my life more.

Charlene Hughes (quilting): I resolve to wallow in riotous expression and make my quilts (that have a lot to say) sing.

May Izumi (sculpture): I resolve to stop being mentally lazy when it comes to thinking about things I want to make.

Jianjie Ji (painting): I resolve to enjoy playing with reminiscences from the history of painted pictures.

Mark Kadota (painting): To quiet the fears and doubts in my internal landscapes.

Ron Kowalke (professor/painting/ printmaking): To embrace the daily practice of compassion, forgiveness and creativity as a personal and universal healing process.

Mat Kubo (sculpture/installation): I resolve to bring hope back.

Sidney Lynch (weaving/pottery): Take the time to fix the flat tire on the bike that was abandoned outside our new office so that I can ride it slowly around our new neighborhood and explore the streets and alleyways.

Saint Marko (conceptual arts): Listen and Learn.

Toni Martin (professor/gallery director/painting/pastels): To do more of my new series and not let incidental interruptions get in the way — more like going on a diet that avoids junk stuff and goes for discipline of time and appetite.

Arthur Nelander (painting/printmaking): I resolve not to obsess about obsessing.

Deb Nehmad (pyrography/printmaking): I resolve to continue work on my piece "collateral damage" until there is an end to war-related civilian deaths in Iraq and to embark on a piece addressing the genocide in Dafur.

Timothy Ojile (painting): Paint, draw, sketch, show, sell and wish for peace everywhere.

Ira Ono (Big Island, mixed media): In this, the year of the pig, I will learn to ride a horse.

Chris Reiner (found object "obtainium" sculpting): To add two new neighborhoods to my search for obtainium and get paid for sitting in traffic 20 hours a week.

Cade Roster (mixed media): I resolve to say "no" more often.

Laura Ruby (professor/printmaking): I resolve to select from among my hundreds of pre-Katrina photographs of New Orleans and organize them for an exhibition before the complex and wonderful Crescent City recedes further into memory.

Warren Stenberg (painting): I resolve to stop washing my watercolor brush in my morning coffee.

Sharon Sussman (professor/ painting/computer animation): I resolve to being grateful every day I am in my new studio space and commit to drawing a self-portrait every day.

Lori Uyehara (mixed media/wood sculpting): I resolve to create more joy and prosperity of spirit.

Yida Wang (professor/drawing/painting): I am going to get a life!

Shige Yamada (Maui, painting/sculpting): The only sane thing to do in this New Year, in my mind, is resolve to remember life is precious, use it wisely.

Maile Yawata (printmaking): I'm resolving to do whatever I feel like art-wise and see what happens.

Cora Yee (painting/printmaking/jewelry design): I resolve to work hard painting for my solo show, design more jewelry and take an Adobe Photoshop class.
