The last day of 1947 was the last day for the O'ahu Railway & Land Co. train operation. At its peak in the early 1900s, the O'ahu Railway & Land Co., one of seven major railroads that served the Islands, extended 160 miles, hauling sugar to docks, pineapples to canneries and construction materials to work sites. It also was used for military and civilian transport, particularly during the World War II years. The first nine miles of the OR&L opened on Nov. 16, 1889, King Kaläkaua's 53rd birthday.

1879: 'Iolani Palace’s cornerstone is laid.

1903: This was the last day Kaläkaua silver was legal tender in Hawai'i.

1910: J.C. “Bud” Mars completes the first airplane flight in Hawai'i.

1926: It is announced the territory has acquired 119.3 acres of land to build Rodgers Airport at Moanalua. The land was sold by the Damon Estate for $27,410.

1971: Two people are killed in a flash flood at Sacred Falls.

1976: O'ahu refuse collectors stage their biggest work stoppage since the 1972 walkout.
