HIGH SCHOOLS
Utah's Timpview beats Iolani in overtime

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KANE'OHE — Bronson Kaufusi sank two free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining in overtime last night to lead Timpview (Provo, Utah) past five-time defending state champion 'Iolani, 57-55, for the consolation championship of the inaugural Merv Lopes Holiday Classic.

Timpview (8-2) is the No. 3-ranked team in Utah.

A crowd of about 800 at King Armory saw 'Iolani guard Ryan Dung send the game into OT with a 3-point basket with two seconds left in regulation.

Raiders forward Liloa Nobriga tied it 55-55 on a layup with 14.9 seconds remaining in overtime, but he missed the ensuing free throw. Timpview's Michael Salazar missed a bank shot, but Kaufusi grabbed the rebound and was fouled on a putback attempt.

After he made both free throws, 'Iolani advanced the ball to halfcourt and called a timeout with 0.8 ticks left. Then, Kela Marciel's desperation shot from just inside the line was wide right as the buzzer went off.

"I'm really pleased we got to play 'Iolani and Punahou (which beat the Thunderbirds 65-64 in Wednesday's first round)," Timpview coach Perry Wildeboer said. "Those are two really good teams. It definitely was worth it for us to come out here."

Wildeboer added, "We knew (the Raiders) were disciplined, they run good sets and patterns and they play good team defense. But we're used to teams being like that in our part of Utah. In fact, our arch-rival, Provo, is very similar and plays the same kind of basketball."

'Iolani, however, was not disciplined enough, according to coach Mark Mugiishi's standards.

"We're having a hard time finishing games," Mugiishi said. "We're making turnovers, making bad decisions, we're not getting key stops, we're missing free throws. We gotta fix that before we start the (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) season next week, so you can bet we're going to be having a lot of situational practices."

Nobriga scored 17 points and Case Miyahira 14 for 'Iolani (10-5). Timpview's Andrew Cusick scored a game-high 25 points.

Kimo Makaula then made a layup and two free throws in the next minute to put the Buffanblu up, 52-46.

Chase Moses' short banker closed it to 54-51 with 17 seconds left, but Makaula converted both free throws after an intentional foul with 10.6 ticks remaining, and Punahou proceeded to dribble out the clock.

OSTROWSKI CONSIDERS UH

Punahou School senior Miah Ostrowski, a three-time Advertiser All-State guard in basketball and two-time All-State receiver in football, said last night his ideal option would be to play both sports in college, and the University of Hawai'i is the only place he would be willing to pull the double-duty.

After scoring 14 points, dishing out three assists, grabbing two rebounds and making one steal in a 69-57 loss to nationally ranked Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) last night, Ostrowski told The Advertiser that UH already has offered him a football scholarship, and he has received basketball offers from Montana State, Santa Clara and Texas State, among others.

When asked what sport he would prefer to play at the next level, Ostrowski said, "I want to play both football and basketball."

But, Ostrowski said, "If I play football, it would only be for UH."

He said he plans to make his decision before the official National Letter of Intent signing period begins in February, but for now he is "focused on getting back into basketball shape."

Ostrowski, 5 feet 9 and 170 pounds, does not have an official recruiting visit scheduled at UH.
