Atkinson expected to reopen today

Advertiser Staff

A police officer directed traffic around a water main break in front of the Ala Moana Hotel on Atkinson Drive. The break was the second in as many days in the Kaka'ako-Ala Moana area. On Monday, a ruptured pipe shut down Kapi'olani Boulevard near Ward Avenue.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews this morning were expected to be completed with repairs to a 12-inch water main that broke early yesterday under Atkinson Drive.

The break was reported at 3:56 a.m. yesterday fronting the Ala Moana Hotel and closed Atkinson between Mahukona and Kona streets.

Police later opened one lane to allow contra-flow traffic in both directions.

Crews worked to repair the main last night and a contractor was expected to repair and resurface the road in time to reopen the road this morning, said Wanda Yamane, Board of Water Supply spokeswoman.

One customer. The YMCA, was without water early in the day but by late morning, water was restored to the building.

Yamane said the water main was installed in 1934 and is part of a pipeline replacement project that is scheduled to begin this summer.

Yesterday's break was the second in as many days in the Kaka'ako-Ala Moana area. On Monday, a 12-inch pipe ruptured under Kapi'olani Boulevard and forced police to close a portion of the road between Ward Avenue and Kamake'e Street for nearly a day while repairs were made.

The break interrupted water service to five area businesses for about 13 hours.

• Correction: The Central Branch YMCA was without water part of Tuesday morning as a result of the Atkinson Drive water-main break. An earlier version of this story incorrectly said no water customers were affected.
