Kalani girls stun Pearl City in OIA soccer

The Kalani girls soccer team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in O'ahu Interscholastic Association tournament history when the sixth-seeded Falcons knocked off top-seeded Pearl City, 1-0, in the semifinals last night.

Falcons junior forward Alyson Suehiro scored in the win at Kapolei.

Kalani faces Mililani for the championship Saturday at Kaiser at 4 p.m.

Mililani defeated Moanalua, 1-0, in yesterday's other semifinal. All four advance to next week's state tournament. Kaiser and Castle play for the OIA's fifth berth Friday at Castle at 7 p.m.

"It feels good; no one expects us because we're underdogs," Suehiro said.

The last time Kalani qualified for the OIA tournament was 2001; Pearl City is a contender for the state title every year. Kalani (8-2-3) was the East's sixth-place team and Pearl City (10-1-1) blew through the West without a loss.

"As far as I know, it's the biggest win in my coaching history," said Kalani first-year coach Ryan Shinkawa. "It's a huge win. It's nice to create some excitement for the players, the program, and the community."

Suehiro scored in the 31st minute on an assist from sophomore forward Rosie Chinen. Chinen started the play when she settled a ball near midfield, and sent a long ball up the gut of the Pearl City defense.

Suehiro slipped behind the defenders, cut the ball to her left foot and sent a solid shot into the right netting.

"Our coaches told us to drive it to the goal because they only had three defenders," she said.

Kalani dominated the first half, possessing the ball and finding their players open on seemingly every pass.

"We talked about that," Pearl City co-head coach Frank Baumholtz said of Kalani's passing. "They took us out of our game plan. They possessed the ball like crazy. Mentally, we were not on our game plan."

MILILANI 1, MOANALUA 0

In a game with few offensive opportunities, the ball bounced Mililani's way.

Sophomore forward Shelyce Ichimura scored in the 24th minute for the Trojans (10-1-1), who advance to the championship for the fifth straight time.

Ichimura tracked down a ball that popped up and took a funny bounce after a Moanalua defender tried to clear it. Ichimura played the bounce well, shooting the ball into the upper part of the goal.

"It was bouncing around, and the defender came," she said. "I got a chance to set up and shoot."

Moanalua's (9-2-1) best chance of the first half came with 5 minutes left, when senior forward Haloye Wilcox found junior forward Vanessa Butin open in the box, but Butin's shot was straight at the goalkeeper.
